Tremendous flames rip through a Gulf gas station located on Hempstead Turnpike and Westminister Road in West Hempstead around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, Dec. 6. The West Hempstead Fire Department was on the scene as were firefighters from several communities to extinguish the blaze. Nassau County fire marshals were on the scene to determine a cause. State Senator Michael Balboni released the findings of a recent hearing he hosted focusing on Long Island's level of preparedness for a major hurricane or other catastrophic event. The results show that neither Nassau nor Suffolk Counties are doing enough to protect Long Islanders from a catastrophe, whether it's a hurricane, blizzard, disease outbreak or terrorist attack.
