Young Israel of West Hempstead.

It was a half a decade ago, in 1955, that a small group of visionary families tapped into their pioneering spirit and joined together to found an Orthodox synagogue in what was then the "wilds of Long Island." This new kehilla was to be known as the West Hempstead Synagogue and would hold it services in the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County, which had been established only two years earlier.
As additional families moved into the neighborhood and synagogue membership began to grow, it was decided that a national affiliation was the desirable next step. Therefore, in 1957, the former West Hempstead Synagogue affiliated with the National Council of Young Israel and became, what is today, the Young Israel of West Hempstead.
This year, as the Young Israel of West Hempstead celebrates it Jubilee Anniversary, and looks forward to its bright future of continued growth as a vibrant and vital Torah community, it also takes the opportunity to remember and celebrate its illustrious history. In doing so, it is most appropriate that the distinguished honorees at the Young Israel of West Hempstead's 50th Anniversary Dinner will be those very founding families who had a dream and a vision, as well as the determination, fortitude and love that would make the dream an actuality...the vision a living, breathing reality.
No celebration of the Young Israel of West Hempstead's Jubilee Anniversary could be complete without also honoring the devoted rabbis who have led the congregation through the first 50 years -- molding a united and compassionate Torah community through their wisdom, sensitivity, compassion, patience...and healthy sense of humor. The Young Israel will also recognize the contribution of all its former presidents, and pay tribute to them for their leadership and devotion in what is often a thankless job.
The Award for Distinguished Service will be presented to a "born and bred" Young Israel of West Hempstead member, Michael Levine. From his earliest involvement as a youth leader, through his more recent service on a myriad of committees and programs, Michael is a most eloquent example of selfless dedication,
The Sisterhood of the Young Israel of West Hempstead will present its Aishes Chayil award to Lillian Heiman, whose longstanding service to the community -- most notably as a respected, compassionate and caring member of the Chesed Shel Emes Committee -- truly makes her the epitome of the Woman of Valor and most deserving of this honor.
The Young Israel of West Hempstead's Jubilee Dinner will take place on Saturday evening, December 17 at the Sands at Atlantic Beach. For a full list of honorees, reservations, and further information, please visit the dinner website at www.yiwhdinner.com.
