September 11 Must Be a Day of Remembrance and Service

"As we observe the fourth anniversary of September 11, 2001, another tragedy has brought our nation together to help those in need.

"Four years ago, our world was changed unsuspectingly. Since that horrible morning, we have carried on with a heavy heart and a renewed sense of purpose. This September 11 we must remember those we lost, but it is just as important we remember the heroism of those who responded when America needed them most.

"Once again a tragedy has sounded the call for more American heroes to step forward. America answered the call when New York suffered its great loss four years ago, and now it is time for us to reach out to Americans needing our help today.

"This September 11 I ask you to keep the spirit for the brave firefighters and police officers who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center to save people they had never met. We must follow in the footsteps of the rescue workers who spent countless hours digging through the ruins of lower Manhattan in hopes of finding survivors. And we must always keep in mind the heroism of the brave men and women who have risked all on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

"September 11 is a day of remembrance, but we should also make it a day of service. This September 11 volunteer your time to a worthy cause, make a donation to charity offering relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, give blood, or participate in any activity that will help those in need.

"For ideas on how you can give back to your community, please visit www.onedayspay.org. One Day's Pay is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making September 11 a national day of service.

"Four years ago our hearts were broken but our spirit grew stronger. This September 11 we must renew our commitment to make America a better, stronger place for all Americans. Thank you, and may God bless America."
