Assemblyman Tom Alfano visited the Elmont Public Library to deliver a $10,000 grant check to library trustees that is being utilized for several programs and services to the community at large. Trustee President Brian Lynn and Trustee Joe Marziotto joined Alfano in the presentation at a children's program with parents, community members and young people of all ages.
"I'm real happy to have been able to channel this grant for the Elmont Library. The programs and services the library provides really enhance the quality of life our young people have in the Elmont community," said Assemblyman Alfano.
Alfano made the presentation during a children's program where young people were celebrating books. Trustee President Brian Lynn said, "The library really appreciates the funding it receives from Assemblyman Alfano. The grant goes toward services that hundreds of our young people utilize. The library is an educational center for learning. This grant helps us provide quality services."
The grant Alfano secured is being utilized in a highly successful program administered by Dr. Linda Opyr, chairperson of the English Department at Sewanhaka High School. The program consists of SAT prep work on the English battery exam. The battery tests cognitive reasoning as well as English usage, reading comprehension and the like. The second program is a "Write Correctly" workshop. The workshop goes over strategies in writing in communicating thoughts, ideas and paper development.
"These programs are assisting our young people achieve their full potential. With extra help outside the classroom, students who may need that extra one-on-one time are getting it by professionals who are experts in their respective fields. In this case, the Elmont Library saw a need and they put together a plan of action that is helping students throughout Elmont. I want to thank the board and staff for doing an outstanding job."
