At H. Frank Carey High School and Elmont Memorial High School, the Class of 2005 took the next step on their journey through life by graduating from high school.
At Carey High School in Franklin Square, as is tradition, a graduation ceremony was held in the courtyard of the school.
As is also a tradition, numerous students won annual awards and scholarships. Here is some of the award winners:
The 2005 Jeanette Weber Memorial Scholarship was presented to Nicole Famulari by Dr. Charles Weber.
The Garden City So. Merchant Association Award went to Jessica Coker and Michael DeVito. The award was presented by Diane Sammarco and Brian McCarthy.
The Paul Brito Memorial Scholarship was presented to Daniel Heuser-Bastian. Paul's brother Anthony and father presented the award to Daniel.
Julie Davis-Olson and Mark Oxious presented awards on behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Franklin Square. The Kiwanis Club of Franklin Square Award went to Paul Feibus and Liz Schmidt. The Presidential Freedom Scholarship went to Katelyn Kelly and Nicole VanKeuren.
The Tommy Hetzel Memorial Award was presented to Ryan Murphy.
The Robert T. Cavaliere Memorial Scholarship was presented by Joseph and Coleen Cavaliere on behalf of the Cavaliere family to Kaitlyn Eymold.
The Rosalie Scorca Memorial Scholarship was presented by Teresa Rolla to Nicole Rosini.
The Student Government Service Award was presented by Teresa Rolla to Katelyn Kelly.
The annual Frank E. Cosgrove Memorial Scholarship was presented to Kevin Lapinsky by Carey Secretary Mrs. Miriam Cosgrove.
The Outstanding Male Athlete of the class of 2005 went to Anthony Kowalsky and the Outstanding Female Athlete went to Kaitlyn Eymold. The awards were presented by Athletic Director Edward Quinlan.
The Outstanding Music Senior Award was presented by Music Chairperson Marilyn Engel to Matthew Koraus.
The High School Blood Drive Scholarship was presented by senior class advisor Stephanie Sellers on behalf of Long Island Blood Services to Katelyn Kelly and Raffaella Cimino.
At Elmont Memorial High School, students received congratulations for earning their diplomas. Student president Jessica Forbes and vice-president Rouby Chapron welcomed Assemblyman Tom Alfano.
Alfano spoke about working hard and using role models and leaders like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to make change and strive for dreams. "You have strong family structures who love and care for you. Now, continue to make them proud and go accomplish all you can," he told the students.
Alfano also congratulated Salutatorian Oduche Igboechi, who will begin his studies at Harvard this fall, and Valedectorian Nick Simon, who will start a pre-med program at Stonybrook University.
