The Elmont School District may spend the least per pupil out of any school district in Nassau County but it has earned a reputation of achieving well on state standardized tests. Scores recently released for the 2003-2004 school year were no exception.
The Elmont School District saw 87 percent of its students meeting or exceeding state standards on the fourth grade state English exam and 97 percent on the fourth grade state Math exam.
The Covert Avenue School led the way with 99 percent in English and 99 in math. Clara H. Carlson had 83 percent of fourth grade students meet or exceed state standards in fourth grade English and 97 percent in math. Alden Terrace posted numbers of 91 and 99 percent. At Dutch Broadway, the numbers were 86 percent for English and 99 percent in math. At Gotham Avenue, it was 86 percent for English and 94 percent for math and at Stewart Manor, it was 82 percent for English and 98 percent for math.
The Franklin Square School District, which also has among the lowest per pupil spending in Nassau County, also posted excellent scores with 85 percent of its students meeting or exceeding state standards in fourth grade English and 98 percent in fourth grade math.
The Polk Street School had 85 percent in English meeting or exceeding state standards in fourth grade and 100 percent in math. The John Street School had 84 percent in English and 98 in math and the Washington Street School had 87 percent in English and 97 percent in math.
The West Hempstead School District saw 83 percent of its students meeting or exceeding state standards in fourth grade English and 94 percent in fourth grade math. The Corwell Avenue School had 78 percent in English and 98 percent in math whereas the George Washington School had 85 percent in English and 92 percent in math.
