Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray is encouraging residents of America's largest township to support the ongoing relief efforts in wake of the recent tsunami disaster that has ravaged Southeast Asia. "As suggested by the many charitable and relief organizations that are providing aid to the tsunami victims, the quickest and most effective means of assistance is a financial donation to groups such as the Red Cross."

The town will continue to monitor the relief effort to remain current on suggested methods of cooperation and support. Beyond the Red Cross, Murray also specified the Salvation Army, UNICEF, the Christian Children's Fund, Humanity First and Save the Children as groups accepting checks for donation. The town web site at www.toh.li will provide a complete listing of relief agencies and their phone numbers.

"I appeal to the many kind hearted and well intentioned town residents who share my concern for the tsunami victims and are willing to help in any way possible," commented Murray. "Financial donations will provide a valuable impetus to the overall recovery effort and will ensure the immediate availability of food, clothing and medical supplies."

The Dec. 26 tsunami caused an almost incomprehensible amount of death and destruction including over 150,000 fatalities, hundreds of thousands who were injured and a million plus now homeless. Approximately 12 countries over a range of 3,000 miles were affected by the tsunami. Impacted nations include Sri Lanka (the worst hit), Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

"The ethnic diversity that accentuates a population of 739,000 residents brings the tragedy and sorrow of the tsunami home to local neighborhoods and communities," stated Murray. "Our own friends, neighbors and associates who have relatives or family histories in the impacted countries are truly grief stricken. As a township we will rally to the needs of our fellow residents with compassion and camaraderie."

Murray reaffirmed the town's willingness to assist and augment any reputable response effort undertaken by area charities and relief groups.
