Mr. Alfano served with bravery in the 3rd Infantry of the United States Army from January 1942 until 1945. Sergeant Alfano and his regiment fought Nazi occupation in Northern France and the Rhineland area of Germany. He was wounded during the conflict and received his Purple Heart 60 years after his injury. In addition to receiving the Purple Heart, Mr. Alfano was presented with the Bronze Star for bravery, Combat Infantry Badge, American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Upon leaving the military, Mr. Alfano and his wife Mary settled in Elmont where they have lived for the past 48 years. For many years he owned and operated a barber shop in Ozone Park, Queens. After retiring, Mr. Alfano dedicated his time to helping patients at Winthrop-University Hospital where he gave haircuts and shaves. "Mr. Alfano has worked his entire life for the betterment of his family and his country. It is a privilege to present him with his well deserved awards," added Ciotti.
