The administrative team of H. Frank Carey H.S. composed of Principal Douglas Monaghan and assistant principals Sharon Flynn and Lorraine Wright recently hosted a breakfast for the dedicated clerical staff, led by head clerk, Pat Pugni. The administrative team and the faculty are most appreciative of the wonderful clerical staff at Carey.

Ninth-grader Maggie Austen was named the H. Frank Carey volunteer of the year in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards recognize outstanding community service by young Americans. Maggie is now eligible for the NY youth volunteer of the year award given annually to one middle school and one high school student.

Maggie's major volunteer community service project was to organize through the Carey Community Action Club the "Pocket Change for Puppies" fund-raiser. With this "pocket change," the Community Action club raised over $800 for the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown. The money was used to train dogs so that they can be guide dogs for the blind and the visually impaired. Maggie had independently researched the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation along with coordinating the fundraising efforts.

"Young people who contribute their time and talents to their communities are role models for all of us," said Prudential Chairman Art Ryan. "We salute their dedication, their achievements and their spirit of community."

"These Honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate- that volunteering within the community is an essential part of one's life," said NASS Executive Director Gerald Tirozzi.

Mr. Monaghan, principal of Carey, also praised Maggie for her volunteer service. Mr. Monaghan presented Maggie with her certificate and announced to the whole school the well-deserved recognition that Maggie had earned.
