I have the following message for Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray:

Kate, enough is enough. You have reached the limit of our patience and the bottom of our pocketbooks. The constant barrage of your multi-color slick brochures, which is really campaign propaganda, must be costing us millions of tax dollars.

Your name is on every town construction site and on huge banners at the Lido Beach town complex. In one week, I counted 14 photos of you in community newspapers giving out proclamations to senior citizens, business groups and to kids in a nursery school. Kate, stop wasting our money on this nonsense.

You seem to find time for these public relations trips but you haven't yet taken any meaningful action against illegal apartments. The growth of illegal housing in the Town of Hempstead has gotten out of control - one of your councilmen has called it "a plague" and it has been estimated to add $10 million annually to school taxes in one school district alone.

As the town's top official, it's your job to enforce the zoning laws. Residents want you to read the riot act to landlords of illegal housing, so what do you do? You issue another of your brochures. This one was so wishy-washy, so weak and feeble that it did more harm than good. What you should have done in this brochure is to warn absentee landlords that they are violating the law and may be put in jail.

If your building inspectors can't find the illegal apartments tell them to look in the local newspapers and on supermarket bulletin boards. They'll find dozens of ads for apartment rentals, complete with telephone numbers and details.

But one of your extreme publicity shots is the one showing you recently with a group of veterans at a drop box for worn flags. As a recipient of three battle stars for serving in the Pacific during the 'big war," I say to you, don't ride the coattails of your veterans for political purposes. Kate, take your name off those flag drop boxes.
