Residents of the Sewanhaka Central High School District took to the polls once again this past Tuesday, June 15, to vote for a revised $118, 403, 750 budget as opposed to the $119,145,556 original put forth.
The numbers break down as follows: 633 Elmont residents voted yes while 453 voted no; 750 Floral Park-Bellerose residents voted yes while 801 voted no; 565 Franklin Square residents voted yes while 484 voted no and 1,211 New Hyde Park/Garden City Park residents voted yes while 1,065 voted no.
The district saw its budget fail May 18 by 397 votes. As a result, the board of education and the district decided to reduce it by $741,800.
If it failed the second time around, Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Goldstein, who is retiring at the end of the month, said the district would go on austerity and have to cut another $1.5 million from it. He said all capital projects would have been gone; community use of facilities would have been gone, as would intramural sports and some music programs; summer school would also have been abolished.
