As New York's older population steadily increases, more and more people are turning to private pay assisted living facilities for housing. Why hasn't the state acted to ensure that these residents are guaranteed basic consumer protection? Right now, these facilities are not overseen by the Department of Health; there are no clear standards for admission and discharge, and they are not licensed.

I recently participated in AARP's lobby day to let my legislators know this can't continue. These residents need protection now. AARP has been advocating for a law that would establish consumer protections, but the governor, senate and assembly have not been able to come together to get it done. Older New Yorkers can't wait another year for an assisted living law.
