In a major step toward realization of last year's public referendum, the West Hempstead Public Library announced that a property acquisition blueprint is now in place.
Library trustees recently reached agreement with the present owner to purchase the southernmost parcel of land where a vacant gasoline service station now sits at the Hempstead Avenue site opposite the Mutual Engraving Building. The northern parcel where a strip shopping center exists will be acquired through the public acquisition process called eminent domain.
West Hempstead Public Library Director Regina Mascia says that this is a significant step, and the first of many. "Property acquisition marks the first major step in the construction of a new library building," said Mascia. "Once pieces like this fall into place, construction plans can begin in earnest for what will certainly become the new heart of West Hempstead."
Gibbons, Heidtmann, Salvador Architects & Planners, P.C. was awarded the architectural contract, because, according to Mascia, of their strong reputation and record of exceptional design. "They are committed to meeting the high expectations of the library's trustees and of the community by creating a structure that is in visual harmony with the West Hempstead community," she said.
West Hempstead Public Library Board of Trustees President Ralph J. Reissman expects positive feedback and excitement from the community once site clearing begins later this year. "The board has been working diligently toward keeping this project on schedule and within budget," said Reissman. "The new building will include all the resources, programs, and facilities that a 21st century library should have, and that our patrons deserve. I know that our community will take advantage of the countless resources the new library will have to offer."
