After a great deal of time and effort, the holiday at Hall's Pond Park was taken over by mother nature. Heavy snow and driving winds, followed by a downpour of rain forced the cancellation of the event this past Sunday.

Though the weather was horrible, members of the West Hempstead Civic Association withstood the rather harsh conditions to decorate Hall's Pond. Covered in snow and ice, the Christmas tree and Menorah were placed. The main entrance, bridge, and various other places in the park were all decorated in anticipation of the weather possibly breaking, but it never did. At approximately 11 a.m., it was realized the event could not go on. Calls were made to cancel the numerous activities and people scheduled to come and help celebrate the event.

What exactly drove these individuals out of their warm homes early Sunday morning, in the midst of a driving snow storm? Numerous meetings, carefully laid plans, local businesses contributing and volunteers engaged all for the one purpose - the children of this community. The thought of the expressions of our children's faces was indeed enough to force us into the storm. I truly cannot say enough about the people who withstood these horrid conditions for that one purpose.

This effort was indeed the true spirit of the holiday season. If there is any doubt that the holiday season has diminished in any way, I would like you to think of these outstanding individuals. I can personally assure you that the spirit of the season is alive and well in West Hempstead.

From our homes to yours, Happy Holidays.
