By Kate Murray, Supervisor Town of Hempstead
I would like to invite all residents of the Town of Hempstead to join us at the annual Tree, Kwanzaa and Menorah Lighting ceremony.
This year I'm delighted to announce that Justin Navarro of Levittown will turn on the lights to our holiday tree of remembrance. Justin is the son of US Army Sgt. Rick Navarro, who is currently on duty in Iraq. Justin, who will not have his father with him this holiday season, will represent all families who have loved ones overseas fighting for our freedom.
The tree of remembrance will be decorated with the sand dollars used in our September 11 memorial service at Point Lookout. The sand dollars have messages written on them in honor of September 11 victims composed by those who were in attendance at the service. It seems only appropriate that the sand dollars be displayed during this season of reflection and goodness.
During the ceremony there will be live music and a visit from Santa. Refreshments, including hot cocoa and cookies, will be provided afterwards. I hope residents will attend this festive event and get into holiday spirit.
The tree and menorah lighting ceremony will take place Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. at Hempstead Town Plaza, located at One Washington Street in Hempstead.
From my family to yours, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.
