A vote was held on September 18 on referendum to allow North Valley Stream and East Franklin Square residents who currently do not receive library services to, in the case of North Valley Stream, establish a North Valley Stream Library Funding District, and, in the case of East Franklin Square, establish an East Franklin Square Library District.
The propositions on the ballot asked voters if they would be in favor of creating a library district, whether they would be willing to assume the tax responsibility to financially support the library, and what host library the newly created district would contract with.
Preliminary results indicate that residents of both North Valley Stream and East Franklin Square who are not currently receiving library service are strongly in favor of creating library districts.
Residents not receiving library services in North Valley Stream voted 391 to 36 in favor of creating a North Valley Stream Library Funding District; 310-42 to support a library budget and chose to contract with the Valley Stream Library (271 votes) over the Elmont Library (214) and the West Hempstead Library (18 votes).
Residents not receiving library services in East Franklin Square voted 190 to 48 in favor of creating an East Franklin Square Library Funding District; 132 to 36 to support a library budget and chose to contract with the Elmont Public Library (132) over Valley Stream (66), Malverne (64) and the West Hempstead Library (22).
These results are preliminary numbers.
Town of Hempstead Councilman Ed Ambrosino said that if approved, residents of newly created library district would receive full service library cards through a host library starting in January 2004.
