A shootout with Nassau County Police officers who responded to a robbery attempt at a CVS in Franklin Square on Sunday night at 9:50 p.m. left a suspect dead.

According to detectives, 5th Precinct police officers responded to CVS, located at 640 Franklin Avenue, for a suspicious person. "Just as they arrived on scene, someone inside was on the phone with somebody outside the building telling them they were being robbed so the officers were told it was a robbery in progress," said Detective Lieutenant Dennis Farrell of the Nassau County Homicide Squad.

According to police, the officers entered the store and proceeded towards a door to an office area when they were confronted by a man wearing gloves and a bandana to hide his identity and armed with a handgun.

"They just about reached [the office area] and the door flew open and the subject engaged them in gunfire," said Farrell.

Additional police officers responded to help safely evacuate persons from the store. According to police, the subject retreated to the rear of the store where he again fired rounds at officers who returned fire. Police said the subject then exited the rear of the store from a side door and encountered additional officers.

Police said the subject again fired rounds and police officers returned fire. According to police, the subject then fell down near a dry creek bed that abuts the rear of the store and did not fire any more rounds. Police officers approached to disarm the subject and discovered that the subject had multiple gunshot wounds.

Police officers transported the subject to Mercy Medical Center. At 6 a.m. on Monday morning, the subject was pronounced dead. He was later identified as Antoine York, 19, of Brooklyn.

Police are reviewing the medical examiner's report and a ballistics test to determine whether the subject was shot with police gunfire or a self inflicted gunshot wound. "It's quite possible that he died of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Other officers responding had outflanked the suspect. As the officers were approaching, they suddenly heard one gunshot that they knew none of them had fired," said Farrell.

Police report that there were no injuries to civilians or officers. Police said there were not many customers in the store since the incident occurred around the time the store closed.

Detectives are investigating the possibility that the incident is connected to a recent series of robberies in the 5th Precinct involving a subject with a handgun. "It does appear that he may be responsible for three other robberies going back to the beginning of the month," said Farrell.
