Even as the summer winds down it is important that people are aware that the sun can present health risks. While summer can be a fun and relaxing time, too often it becomes a time of burns and heat exhaustion. The good news however, is that you can avoid the ill effects of overexposure to the sun by following some summer safety tips:

Remember that a cloudy day can be deceiving and is a time when many people receive sunburn.

Limiting your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun is strongest, will help minimize your chances of suffering the effects of overexposure to the sun.

Wearing a hat and clothing that covers more skin such as a long-sleeved shirt and pants will help protect your skin.

For uncovered skin, sunscreen is especially important. Sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 is best and it is recommended that it be reapplied every two hours and after swimming or perspiring. Consistent use of sunscreen in childhood could help prevent 80 percent of all skin cancers.

Sun protective eyewear is the best defense for your eyes. This includes sunglasses, ski goggles and contact lenses that block UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses can actually reduce the amount of UV rays to the eye by 80 percent.

Staying in any shade that is available is always a good option for both your skin and your eyes.

Some medicines and cosmetics may increase your chance of severe sunburn. Check all labels before going out into the sun.

If you see any signs of skin damage it is important to have it checked by a physician. The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a new growth on the skin or a sore that does not heal.

Summer is a great time of the year and all Town of Hempstead residents who have the advantage of living near our beaches and parks should enjoy them. By being "sun smart" you can enjoy the great outdoors while protecting yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.
