Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Edward Ambrosino have announced that a storm water drain and road improvement project is underway in the Fieldmere Street-109th Avenue area in Elmont.

"The residents of this section in Elmont will benefit from this project, which will improve the appearance of their neighborhood," said Murray. "These upgrades will also make local neighborhood driving more pleasant for neighbors in the area."

The road improvement work will take place on Fieldmere Avenue from Ludlam Avenue to just north of 109th Avenue, Hathaway Avenue from Fieldmere to just west of Sussex Road, Cedar Street, Essex Road, Warwick Road from Hathaway Avenue to 109th Avenue, Sterling Road from Hathaway Avenue to 109th Avenue, Sussex Road, from Hathaway Avenue to 109th Avenue and 109th Avenue from Fieldmere to just south of Locustwood Boulevard.

The contract for this project has been awarded to Richard W. Grim/Bi-Councy Paving Corp. The project will include the construction of new curbs and driveway aprons, installation of pedestrian access ramps at all intersections, improvements to the storm drain system, new asphalt pavement and the restoration of disturbed grass areas. Driveway aprons will be replaced with the same size apron in the current location. During this project the highway department will not be issuing any permits for new driveways.

The contract provides for maintaining access to roads at all times, but some traffic interruption and temporary disuse of driveways is unavoidable.

"Homeowners have been notified of the job so they can plan their schedules during the work period," said Ambrosino. "The roadwork will allow local drivers a more comfortable and safer commute and will add to the beautification of the surrounding area."

Murray added, "We believe that the residents will be pleased with the completed project and that the improvements will far outweigh any inconveniences."

A midsummer completion is expected for the project.
