Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and members of the Hempstead Town Board honored nine women who live or work in the town for their outstanding contributions to the community at the town's annual Pathfinder Awards ceremony.

"As the first woman to hold the town's highest office, this ceremony is particularly close to my heart, said Murray. "The women we are recognizing have excelled in their individual categories and have proven themselves role models and an inspiration to us all."
Murray dedicated the ceremony to the women and all the troops who are currently serving in Iraq.
Among the winners of the Pathfinder Award were Elmont Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Palandra for education
As superintendent of the Elmont School District, Dr. Palandra has worked dilligently and decisively for more than 20 years to promote education, unity and equality in Elmont's racially diverse community. Performing a myriad of responsibilities, her impact on the Elmont School District has been pronounced and profound. Dr. Palandra has also taken a leadership role in the district's ongoing effort to strengthen the important bond that exists between family, school and community. Through all her efforts and all her success, she has always maintained the greatest focus upon the children. She has endeavored to create a district where youngsters can study, play and interact in a safe and comfortable environment.
