Police are still investigating the homicide of a 36-year-old woman who was gunned down in her home on Locustwood Boulevard in Elmont last week.
The woman who was later identified as Stephanie Laing, 36, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in an upstairs bedroom after police responded to a call at 7:35 a.m. on October 31 about shots that may have been fired at that location, according to detectives.
A male companion who was at the location alleged that two black male subjects entered the home, proceeded to the upstairs bedroom and shot the victim. The male companion then chased the subjects who fled the scene in a maroon or red sport utility vehicle, but was involved in an auto accident shortly thereafter.
Police are looking into whether the victim and the intruders were known to each other. However, it does appear Laing was the intended victim of the crime. "Without any question our victim was the target. There was no move toward anyone else. While the robbery may have been a motive, that is not clear at this time because they were only in the house a short time when the victim was murdered," said Nassau Homicide Detective Lieutenant Dennis Farrell.
Police believe there were at least two people involved in the crime, but perhaps more since someone could have been driving the vehicle used to flee the scene.
Laing was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital at 8:16 a.m. She had two grown children as well as two younger children and owned a grocery store in the Bronx.
Police ask anyone with information about the incident or neighbors who may have seen something they thought was unusual to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
