One of the Town of Hempstead's most popular fall features, the Rock Hall Country Fair, is returning for the weekend of Oct. 19 - 20 to the Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence.

A country band, children's performers and pony rides are just a few of the features of the Rock Hall Country Fair. In addition there will be an 18th century cooking demonstration and a Civil War Encampment, both of which should be fascinating and give real insight into days gone by. You can come down for any of these events or to enjoy the harvest market, the crafts or the animal farm. You also won't want to miss the opportunity to make your own scarecrow.

Children can wear their Halloween costumes for a contest and parade at 2:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Each participant will win a prize.

This is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend some quality time together in a fun atmosphere. A visit to Rock Hall Museum is not only an enjoyable experience, but an educational one as well. Those attending the Rock Hall Country Fair won't want to miss the opportunity to explore our colonial past.

Rock Hall is one of the most historically significant structures in the Town of Hempstead. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Georgian-style building was constructed circa 1767. It was originally the home of Josiah Martin, an English gentleman farmer of considerable means. Thomas Hewlett, a member of one of Long Island's most prominent early families, then purchased the mansion and 125 acres of land. The mansion is now owned and maintained by the Town of Hempstead and is affiliated with the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities. Visitors will enjoy viewing the recently installed cellar exhibits including a cold storage area and wine cellar. Those attending the fair are welcomed to tour this historical home which provides visitors the chance to look back on colonial Long Island.

I would like to thank the Friends of Rock Hall, without whom this event would not be possible, as well as all our corporate sponsors.

I encourage all Town of Hempstead residents to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enjoy some good, old-fashioned autumn fun.

The 17th annual Rock Hall Country Fair features free admission and free parking. The event is being held at the museum, located at 199 Broadway, Lawrence on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 19 - 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
