As we are all aware there has been very little rain and snow on Long Island this year, leading to some water concerns in our area. There are several things that Town of Hempstead residents can do to prevent water shortages from becoming a serious concern. With spring here and plants blooming, I would like to remind residents about some watering regulations that are in place to help prevent drought conditions and make some suggestions for water conservation.

In an effort to conserve water the town has instituted an odd/even watering schedule for residents. Those with odd numbered addresses may water their lawns on odd numbered days and those with even numbered addresses may water on even numbered days. The town has also instituted a policy whereby residents are asked not to water between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is strongest and water evaporates quickly. Shutting sprinklers off when it is raining, windy or after there has been a heavy rain will help prevent water waste. In addition, using a spray nozzle that can be shut off on your hose when washing your car or watering your garden will help conserve water.

Residents are also asked to follow some simple water conservation suggestions that may make a tremendous difference in the town's water supply. Checking faucets, toilets and pipes regularly may prevent waste from any leaks. The town even offers interested residents free conservation kits, designed to detect toilet tank leaks. The kit contains instructions on how to check for leaks as well as information on making necessary repairs. To obtain a free test kit and set of instructions, call the Town of Hempstead Department of Water at 794-8300.

Other conservation suggestions include reusing laundry or dishwashing water for tasks such as watering plants; keeping a bottle of cold water in the refrigerator so you don't have to run the water to get it cold enough; installing water-saving shower heads and faucets; and not keeping the water running while you are washing your face, brushing your teeth, washing dishes, shaving, etc.

Every effort made by residents to save this precious resource will be greatly appreciated by current and future generations.
