By Richard V. Guardino, Jr., Supervisor, Town of Hempstead
The temperatures this winter have been rapidly dropping and while we have not yet had much snow on the ground, it is to be expected that we will eventually see a blanket of white on our lawns and streets. I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents about some of the steps they can take to ensure that the roads and sidewalks are kept safe and clear.
In the Town of Hempstead we are readying ourselves for any possible snowfall. Our snowplows and salt spreaders are ready but roadways must be kept clear of obstructions to ensure their optimum performance.
Snowplow operators can work most efficiently when they are not hampered by cars parked at curbs. Town residents can help by making sure that cars are kept in driveways and/or garages rather than in the street when snow is predicted.
Another item that can hinder snowplows are portable basketball hoops. It is very important that this restriction is followed during the winter months.
I would also like to request that when residents shovel or plow their driveways they pile the snow to their right as they are facing the street. By doing so residents will be sure that the snow will be pushed away by the plows, not plowed back into the driveway apron.
Keeping the sidewalks free of snow and ice will also help ensure that your neighbors, family and friends are safe this winter.
With 1600 miles of municipal roads, we expect that our town vehicles will be kept very busy this winter. We will do our part to ensure that everyone has a safe winter, and with the help of our residents, the winter season's snow can be more enjoyable and less hazardous.
