This season, the varsity volleyball team at Elmont was given little chance of making the playoffs. The team was too young, too inexperienced. That is, until playoff time rolled around and the Lady Spartans sat atop the standings in Conference III.
Coached by Edith Yopp and Michelle Seeley, the Lady Spartans started a bit slowly but gathered steam throughout the season. Led by seniors and co-captains Lisa Lavelle and Sasha Elliot, the Lady Spartans finished 14-2, winning the conference championship with a victory over Hicksville. In the playoffs, 10th seeded Elmont surprised 7th seeded Mepham and 2nd seeded East Meadow before falling in the county semi-finals to 3rd seeded Long Beach.
Other major contributors to the team's success include sophomore setter Dominique Ringold, senior Cynthia Salvant, and senior co-captain Tiffany Daley. Of course, all members of this team were responsible for the team's success. Sisters Lauren Pagan and Samantha Pagan played major minutes. Jenelle George, Krystal Paulin, Suja Rajan and Allison Hankey played important roles off the bench and Rosalyn Reese, Amaka Oweazim and Kristine Jamgotchian improved and contributed as the season progressed.
Everyone on the team worked hard and helped Elmont surprise the rest of Division I. Lisa Levelle and Sasha Eliot led the team in kills and blocks and Cynthia Salvant led the team in digs. But Elmont's rise to the top can truly be attributed to a team effort.
