In this holiday season we are reminded of the promise, the spirit and the hope of America. This vision is achievable in a healthy democracy. If we, as a country, are to maintain a healthy democracy, our students must be taught to think and deliberate about difficult public issues. We, parents, teachers, and staff are all mentors and, as such, must challenge students with thought provoking questions and as always, continue to promote higher academic standards. However, we cannot achieve success without family involvement.
Research suggests that family involvement contributes to the health and well-being of children, youth, families and communities. When family involvement is present, there is improvement in student academic achievement, attendance and classroom behavior, as well as a reduction in risk-taking behaviors.
We know success does not come easily. It takes hard work from everyone in our West Hempstead community. The Board of Education, by continuing to support programs in our schools and community, demonstrates its commitment to the children of the community.
I would like to thank everyone who puts in the time and effort to ensure success for our students. Like most schools, West Hempstead maintains and depends on a small group of active parents. I hope this "small" core will become a "large" group in the coming year.
On behalf of the board of education, administration and staff of the West Hempstead School District, I wish you all a happy, healthy holiday season.
