The weather is hot and so is the tennis! As professional tennis players take to the courts for the U.S. Open, recreational players across Long Island will take to the courts to participate in the "Stop World Hunger" Fall Tennis Tournament. The year 2001 marks the 21st year that the Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournaments have provided an opportunity to take part in no elimination, round-robin play for the benefit of those in greatest need.
The "Stop World Hunger" Fall Tennis Tournament is open to recreational players of all ability levels: intermediate, advanced intermediate, and advanced. Matches are 2 out of 3 sets and are scheduled by the participants at a mutually convenient time and place. Dependent upon registration divisions are setup according to the ability levels and geographic locations of the players.
Events consist of singles for men and women, as well as doubles for men, and women, and mixed teams. The cost for singles is $6. The cost for doubles is $10. Additional donations are welcome but unnecessary. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed hungry children in more than 80 countries.
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Sept. 12. All matches are to be played between Sept. 22, and Nov. 25. Applications and more information may be obtained by writing to: Stop World Hunger Tennis, 53 Elm Place, Amityville, NY 11701. Or, if you prefer, you may call Matt Swit at 631-789-3618.
