By Richard V. Guardino, Jr., Supervisor Town of Hempstead

Though the summer does not officially end for another few weeks, students will tell you that the summer is over the day that school begins. That day is approaching quickly and I would like to offer some back-to-school tips for residents of the Town of Hempstead.

Back-to-school time is often a big transition for children. There is always some type of change, whether it is a new school, new teacher or different classmates. It is important for parents to be very supportive of their children during this transition period. If parents appear enthusiastic and confident about the experience, children will pick up on that and be enthused too. It is sometimes helpful if parents introduce their child to a new teacher prior to the first day of school so the child is more comfortable walking into the classroom on the first day.

Although returning to school can be an exciting time for children, it is important that they are mindful of some important safety tips as they go back to school.

For children who ride the bus to school, it is important that they wait for the bus away from the street. They should also stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals them to enter. When being dropped off, children should walk a safe distance away from the bus so the bus driver can see them as he or she pulls away. Children should also remember to be aware of the traffic around them. Even though it is a state law that vehicles must stop for a stopped school bus, some drivers still disregard this. For safety's sake, children should keep their eyes open for vehicles that may pass the bus.

Children who walk or ride their bikes to school also need to be aware of traffic. Those riding their bikes to school should walk their bikes through intersections. Those who walk to school should always walk with a buddy. Youngsters who walk and ride their bike should always pay attention to traffic signals and the crossing guard. Never cross the street against a light, even if there is no traffic visible.

With the start of school, in most cases, comes homework. Parents should oversee their children's homework time but should not do the homework for them. Distractions such as friends playing outside and television should be kept to a minimum.

Back-to-school time can be both exciting and intimidating for students. Follow these simple tips and you can ensure that the return to school is a pleasant experience for your children.
