1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition announced its Fourth Annual 5K Run/Walk to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research according to Geri Barish, president of the not-for-profit grassroots cancer advocacy organization.
Through various fund-raising events, 1 in 9 has been able to donate money for research into finding the causes and cures of breast cancer. Last year over 1,800 runners, walkers and wheelchairs participated in the 5K Run/Walk, which raised $100,000 for cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Labs.
"We are grateful to all the participants and volunteers who make this event such a wonderful success," said Ms. Barish. "We are especially thankful to our corporate partner, CIGNA, for the valuable resources they provided in helping us raise awareness and much needed funds to fight this terrible disease."
Runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors are encouraged to sign up for an evening of brisk exercise and competition followed by a post-run party featuring refreshments, music and entertainment. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in 13 separate age categories along with a wheelchair award category.
The 5K Run/Walk will take place on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. Pre-registration (prior to Aug. 11) is $15 payable to "1 in 9" PO Box 0423, Baldwin, NY 11510. Run day registration is $20. For additional information, please call 357-9622 or visit their website at www.1in9.org.
