Patricia Motschmann, a resident of West Hempstead was nominated for Council Nominating Committee for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. Together, with 26 other board members, Ms. Motschmann will continue to promote the corporate goals of the Girl Scouts: Leadership, Values, Diversity and Image.

Since 1988, Ms. Motschmann has held many positions on the board for the Girl Scouts. She was a member-at-large, executive vice president and president in 1995. She has been a national delegate at three national meetings and in 1999 led the Girl Scouts' adopted proposal for the National Gold Award Registry. As the public relations coordinator for American Ref-Fuel Company of Hempstead, she has been instrumental in forging a partnership between her company and Girl Scouts. This has resulted in more educational opportunities for the girls and funding for the council. In addition, Ms. Motschmann has served as chair of the strategic planning committee since 1994 and is the recipient of the Town of Hempstead Pathfinder's Award as a Volunteer in Nassau County.

Girl Scouts is the world's largest volunteer organization for girls and young women ages 5 through 18. Girls Scouts of Nassau County serves more than 24,000 in more than 1,450 troops/groups. One in every five girls in Nassau County is a Girl Scout. The Girl Scouts provides girls with learning opportunities, which empowers them to realize their full potential and have fun with their peers in a supportive environment.

In addition to the well-known cookie and camping programs, Girl Scouts also have the following programs: Junior Achievement Day, where girls learn the importance of entrepreneurship; Choices and Challenges, an awareness program that helps girls learn about the dangers of substance abuse; Breast Health Awareness, a program in which girls learn the importance of self-care, supported by 1 and 9; with 1 in 9: The Beast Cancer Action Coalition; Sports Day, a hands-on exploration of sports in partnership with the New York Islanders/Dragons; Chip Tracer, an exploration of journalism in cooperation with Newsday; and Imagination First, an exploration of the cultural art in partnership with Cablevision/Power to Learn.
