As part of their discussions, plans are being looked at that could include the renovation and repair of fencing; as well as providing additional landscaping such as large arbor vitae plants and small trees that would serve as a visual buffer between waiting rail riders and the adjacent industrial properties. "What we are looking at is an economical means of creating a "greenbelt buffer" between West Hempstead commuters and surrounding properties that are not visually appealing," stated Senator Skelos. "I am delighted that in the spirit of good cooperation, we will work with President Ken Bauer and the Long Island Rail Road to enhance the look of the West Hempstead Station that will benefit and address the needs of both commuters and our residents. We want to improve the station as quickly as possible so that riders can begin their day and end their day in a more appealing environment." Supervisor Guardino said, "For too long, West Hempstead residents have had to deal with the deterioration of railroad property, including holes in the fenceline that endangered the welfare of young children. LIRR President Bauer has made a commitment to make the necessary improvements that will protect our residents and enhance their quality of life."

The meeting took place as a result of officials expressing their concerns regarding the deterioration of the station grounds and discussions with area residents. LIRR President Ken Bauer agreed to tour the West Hempstead Station with Skelos, Guardino and Kearney to get a first-hand glimpse of the issues and concerns facing passengers. Railroad officials agreed that improvements were necessary and will be working with Senator Skelos, Supervisor Guardino and Councilman Kearney to bring about the beautification process in an expeditious manner.
