The Elmont boys varsity basketball team begins its season in fine fashion carving out wins versus local rivals Floral Park and Garden City. Coached by Dave Kinsley and Mike Graham, the varsity Spartans beat a scrappy Floral Park team in its first game of the season. Charles Fernandez converted two free throws with 31 seconds left in the game to put Elmont ahead 63-61. Fernandez had 20 points to pace the Spartans and Troy Cammock added 23 points as the team opened the season in style. Against Garden City in the first round of the Haggerty Tournament, Steven Wong tallied 21 points and added 10 rebounds as the Spartans won 66-43.
The Spartans are currently 4-2 in league play and right in the thick of the playoff battle. Season highlights so far include a 55-54 victory over Baldwin. Rendel Johnson sealed the Baldwin victory with a steal and layup with 16 seconds remaining. Senior center Andy Roger scored six points and grabbed a career high 15 rebounds. This past week Elmont gained a great deal of respect by beating top seeded Uniondale 77-70 in overtime. Anil Chinnan hit a layup to send the game into overtime and went 4-4 at the line during the extra session to help seal the win. Chinnan finished the game with 16 points.
With road games ahead against Uniondale and Massapequa, as well as home contest versus Massapequa and Herricks, the season only promises to get even more exciting.
