It is now the time of year that our residents are getting ready to tackle the annual chore of autumn yard cleanup. I would like to remind all Town of Hempstead homeowners that by properly disposing of collected leaves and yard clippings, we can greatly facilitate the process of clearing the town's highways of debris which has the potential to cause dangerous travel conditions.

All raked leaves should be sealed in bags and placed at the curb for collection on Wednesday, which is composting day in the Town of Hempstead. Composting items are limited to 35 in number each Wednesday, and is usually a sufficient amount for all homeowners. If you have a question regarding limits, please call the sanitation department in your area for information.

To ensure that town roads are kept clear, town legislation prohibits sweeping or blowing leaves into the street. This legislation was enacted with the public's safety in mind. If allowed to be swept into the street, leaves would pose additional danger to all who navigate town roadways. Wet leaves are as slippery as ice to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Leaves swept into the street also invite danger for children who might play in them. Car fires can result when leaves are allowed to accumulate where cars are normally parked, as car components can become extremely hot. It is not unusual for leaves to be ignited by catalytic converters which are located beneath the chassis of cars.

Making a concerted effort to keep Hempstead's roadways clear benefits the entire township. Town sanitation and highway crews do a commendable job, but to accomplish the formidable task of maintaining the more than 1,700 miles of town roadways, the cooperation of all residents is needed. Let's all be sure to keep our neighborhoods safe and beautiful this fall season. If everyone pitches in and follows a few simple rules regarding the disposal of fallen leaves, everyone will benefit. I hope you enjoy this most beautiful season here in America's largest township.
