Attention Adults: Now you can play chess in a relaxed and casual setting with others at your own level - from grand masters to beginners. Fun, challenging and informative, the new Long Island Chess Club, under the auspices of the Long Island Chess Nuts, will meet monthly, beginning in September. An exciting and informative series of lectures and lessons wil lbring your game to a new level and increase your victories. Come to hear a variety of chess masters and top chess professionals, including GM's or just come to play and enjoy the game. Attention Children: The Long Island Chess Nuts invites all children (kindergarten through high school) - from beginner to advanced - to learn this exciting game, to advance their chess skills and to play others at their own level. Did you know that chess challenges the mind and that it is the fastest growing "sport" in America for children? Chess improves school grades, reading levels and math scores; it increases confidence and self-esteem.
The upcoming fall session is packed with challenges, special events, tournamens and much more. After-school meetings will be held on Thursdays and Fridays, beginning Sept. 21 in Garden City, and on Mondays in Farmingdale. Beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons, taught by expert chess coaches, will also be available at both locations Due to restricted class these fill quickly. Call for details.
The Long Island Chess Nuts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the benefits of chess to all children - and, now adults - was ranked the 14th largest chess club (out of 2,500) in the US in 1998! "[It] provides a regular schedule of play and instruction for school-age children... [in] the sport of kings," as quoted by Newsday (Dec. 12, 1998.) It is "the largest organization of Long Island where children can advance their chess skills," The NY Times (March 15, 1998.) Sponsors of this organization have included Citibank, the Dime Savings Bank, Roosevelt Field, Anton Newspapers and many others. It is also a member of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.
