Franklin Square residents are taking the opportunity to express their support for the new WWII memorial by making contributions to help build a memorial in Washington, D.C. Donators become Charter Members of the WWII Society and can have the name of a loved one placed in the Registry of Remembrances, which will list the names of individual Americans who participated in the war effort.

The National World War II Memorial will memorialize every American who played a role in winning World War II. Learning about the impact of that war is part of the campaign's effort, as well as raising funds for its completion. Long overdue, groundbreaking ceremonies will take place this year. The Memorial will be located on 7.4 acres of the Lincoln and the Washington Monuments.

"This is a very important project and it allows for the opportunity to recognize the brave young men and women who fought for our country," Alfano said, continuing, "It also gives families the chance to honor and recognize the war efforts of their beloved."

The History Channel recently premiered "Save Our History: The World War II Memorial" documentary tracing the development of the National Memorial and those who played a key role in its creation. It featured the National Chairman, former Senator Bob Dole and former Presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford.

In addition to the documentary, The History Channel will sponsor a major outreach to schools with a nationwide "Save Our Nation" initiative to educate future generations about the war and create awareness for the memorial.

This initiative will include a penny drive, a free 56-page teacher's manual, a video contest for middle and high school students, and online support at historychannel.com. Teachers can request the free manual by calling 1-877-87-LEARN.

Alfano lauded the work of Franklin Square resident Katherine Aliferis. "Katherine has really taken the initiative on the memorial and we're all proud of her," the Assemblyman said.

Alfano encourages continued support of this important worthwhile project.

Information about the World War II Memorial, including registry and donation forms, can be obtained by calling Katherine Aliferis, Field Representative, at 775-0637, by visiting the memorial website at wwwiimemorial.com, or by calling the national customer service line at 1-888-639-4WW2. Tax deductible donations may also be sent to: World War II Memorial Fund, PO Box 98147, Attn: GRKEX, Washington, DC 20090-8147.
