Melissa Yanek placed second in the state qualifying meet with a time of 7:34 for the 1500 meter walk. Not only does this performance entitle Melissa to represent Nassau County in the state championship being held at Syracuse University but it also was a qualifying time for the national meeting being held at the 102nd Armory in New York City on March 11. The Sewanhaka District wrestling team went into the record books accomplishing a feat this district has not achieved in almost 30 years. Seniors Massimo Giugliano and Matt Daddino both emerged as county champions in the Section VIII State Qualifier at Nassau Community College. In the finals, Massimo had to face Lawrence's Brian Volpi, a wrestler who had beaten Massimo twice this season, most recently in the county qualifier just one week earlier. Massimo was unseeded entering the tournament, but his intensity and determination earned him a decisive victory over Volpi and a county championship. Matt Daddino remains undefeated this year after winning the 189-pound weight class wrestling, the toughest competition he has had this season. Matt and Massimo will both compete in the New York State Wrestling Championships in Syracuse. Furthermore, Frank Trezza and Matt Burdi wrestled in the tournament and helped the Sewanhaka District team to proudly finish 10th in the county out of 49 teams, one of the best county finishes for a Sewanhaka District team in the district's history. Matt Daddino has done it! For only the second time in our school's history, Carey has a state wrestling champion. Matt won four matches at the State Tournament Championships, including a grueling double overtime criterion victory in the semifinals, to capture the 189-pound state title. Congratulations to Matt, and also Massimo Giugliano and the Sewanhaka District wrestling team for all their accomplishments this year. Congratulations to the Carey Pirettes who competed in the Long Island Kickline Competition. The girls placed second in the kickline division competing against 14 schools on Long Island. They also placed third in the POM division. A great day for the Pirettes. The district rifle team won the bronze medal at the state rifle championships. Demetrios Karellas won a medal for sixth place in the kneeling position and Anselmo Ioele placed fourth in the alternatives match.
