Both the girl's and boy's winter track teams placed 4th in the conference championships. Jen O'Driscoll placed 3rd in the 1000. Yleana Roman placed second in the high hurdles. Greg Puga was third in the 1000. Melissa Yanek won the 1500 walk in 8:03 and Tim Dand won the high jump with a new school record leap of 6'4". All the above athletes were awarded all-conference honors. The Carey winter track team won 33 medals at Sewanhaka Central High School District track meet. Individual medal winners were: Lauren Moran, Tim Dand and Philip Lamour in the high jump. Jeanne Baker, Rebecca Stewart, Joann Sesack and Frank La Rosa in the shot put. Yleana Roman in the hurdles. Melissa Yanek in the 1500 walk. Jen O'Driscoll and Greg Puga in the 1000. Kevin Mille in the 1600 and Rob Cangialosi in the 3200. The girl's team placed second and the boy's team placed 3rd. The Carey varsity girls basketball team defeated West Hempstead 48-32. Kim Lapinski had her seventh double - of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds and 5 assists. It was also a great defensive game as the team registered 15 steals. Their Conference III record is 5-1. On Martin Luther King Day, at the friendship games, the Seahawks winter track team won 11 medals and one trophy. In novice races, Anthony Garofolo placed 4th in the 600 and Jessica Clasen placed in both the 55 and 300. In open competition, Lauren Moran was 5th in the high jump, Jen O'Driscoll was 5th in the 1600, Yleana Roman was second in the hurdles and Greg Puga was 4th in the 1000. In championship events, Kevin Mille and Rob Cangialosi placed 7th and 8th in the 3200, Frank La Rosa was 9th in the shot put, Tim Dand and Phil Lamour were 2nd and 7th in the high jump. The Sewanhaka District Wrestling team competed in the South Side Tournament. Junior Jason Carnevale, and seniors John Neenan and Frank Trezza, each placed 4th in the tournament. In addition, junior Matt Burdi wrestled to 3rd place. Seniors Massimo Giugliano and Matt Daddino both emerged as tournament champions in their respective weight classes. Matt Daddino was honored as the tournament's most outstanding wrestler be defeating the number one ranked wrestler in Suffolk County by a technical fall 20-5. The Carey varsity girls basketball team increased their league record to 6-2 by defeating the Glen Cove "Big Red" 49-16. Kim Lapinski had 16 points and 10 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead the way. Alaina Intagliata and Liz Eymold each added 10 rebounds. Melissa Ferraro hit her first three pointer and finished with five points.
