The Carey boy's and girl's winter track teams participated in the Jim Fraley meet at Farmingdale University. Kevin Mille placed 4th in the 1600 with a time of 4:52. Frank LaRosa placed 5th in the shot put with a toss of 38'11". Tim Dand won the high jump with a leap of 6'0". Melissa Yanek placed second with a personal best in the 1500 walk of 8:03. Yleana Roman won the 55 hurdles in a new school record of 9.4. This lapses the old school record held by Trina Uliano since 1989. The Sewanhaka District Wrestling team competed in the annual Wheatley Invitational Tournament. The team, as a whole, placed 5th out of 15 different Nassau County teams. Individually, Matt Daddino took his fourth tournament of the year emerging as champion in the 189 pound weight class. Matt Burdi placed third in the tough 135 pound weight class, freshman Mike Durand also placed third, and Tito Sotalin and Jason Carnevale each placed fourth. The highlight of the tournament occurred in the finals where Massimo Giugliano defeated long-time rival, county-runner-up Shawn Swift in overtime. This is Massimo's third championship of the year, and as a result of the victory was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. The Carey boys varsity basketball team defeated Hewlett by a score of 61 to 52. Bobby Mostacci and Bobby Townsend each had 20 points to lead all scores. They say any win is a good win, but an "ugly" win is a great win. The boys are now 3 and 0 in conference and tied for first place. The Carey 7th grade girls volleyball team finished the season defeating the first place team New Hyde Park. The win allowed the team to finish in third place for the season. Some of the outstanding players of the game were Natassia Palma, Tracy Ferrar, Jackie Jaime and Alicia Howard. The Carey varsity boys basketball defeated Levittown Division 71 to 61. Jason Dakis opened the game with 4 consecutive 3 pointers. Scott Mackenzie ended the game with 14 points in the fourth quarter. Bobby Mostacci led all scorers with 20 points. Brian Magone played unbelievable defense. The Carey Varsity girls basketball team opened their season with a 48-22 win over Great Neck South. Alaina Intagliata poured in 10 points and Meghan Karcher added 8 to lead the scoring. The team played great defense and dominated the boards. Kim Lapinski had 12 boards and Mo-Mo Combs had 7. It was a great team win while the Lady Seahawks had 10 people in the scoring column. The Carey girls 7th grade JH Volleyball team opened the season with victories over Sewanhaka and Elmont. Some standout players in the tournament were Stephanie Baccarella, Tracy Ferrar, Nicole DeVito and Catherine Baker. The 7th grade Carey boys basketball team defeated Sewanhaka 43-32. Anthony Kowalsky led the Seahawks with 23 points. Dan Heuser had 11 and Jan Leidner had 6 for the winners. The 8th grade team gave a tremendous effort but lost 51-34. Joe Bryson had 8 points and Alex Dunne had 6. The Carey 8th grade boys basketball team won its first game in 2 years defeating New Hyde Park 44-36. Ronnie Pickett led the team with 10 points and Dan Lainis had 9 and Kevin Ermann 8 for the winners. The 7th grade team also defeated New Hyde park 53-8. Mike Kempel had 10 points and Chris Caridi and Dan Heuser had 8 each for the Seahawks. The Carey JV Basketball team defeated Mineola 29-17. Pat Karellas, Heather Resetar and Monica Rewiako led the offense while Samantha DiMisa, Maria Rewiako and Christi Galligan controlled the boards. The Carey varsity girls basketball team defeated Mineola 47-41 in a non-league game. Sophomore Kim Lapinski led all scorers with 18 points and sophomore Liz Eymold added 12. Eymold also added 7 rebounds. The Carey JH girls volleyball team defeated Elmont Memorial. The team was led by Alicia Howard, Tracy Ferrar, Kaitlyn Kelly and Catherine Baker.
