Assemblyman Thomas Alfano was recognized by the New York Regional Office of the Anti-Defamation League in their review of state legislators for their work and advocacy on hate crimes and discrimination. Alfano was given an "A" for his votes and advocacy on the powerful Assembly Codes Committee.
Howard Katz, executive director of the Anti-Defamation League and chairman of the Coalition on Hate Crimes Legislation, said: "Assemblyman Alfano showed a lot of courage and leadership by stepping out in favor of hate crimes legislation. He truly represents his constituency and realizes it was the right thing to do."
"I thank the Anti-Defamation League for their work on hate crimes and discrimination in our state," said Alfano, adding, "we all have to work together to end discrimination, anti-Semitism and hate."
Alfano's grade was based upon a key vote in the State Assembly that dealt with hate-motivated offenses. The bill would seek to protect individuals based on race, religion, color, national origin, sex, disability or sexual orientation. In addition, the bill would require local law enforcement agencies to identify and report hate crimes to the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services.
