This year, Carey's own Devjani Das and Chris Lee were commended as National Merit scholars (NMS), placing them in the top 5 percent of the NMS Achievement Program.

There are only about 4,500 students out of hundreds of thousands who take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholar Qualification Test (PSAT/NMSQTs) who are commended to colleges under the NMS Achievement Program. The scores of these commended students indicate potential for further academic success. These exceptional students are recognized and brought to the attention of regionally accredited US universities.

When asked about the National Merit Scholars, Principal Thomas Dolan enthusiastically stated, "Dev and Chris are being honored on a national level. That is appropriate as Dev and Chris are some of the outstanding students not only in Carey, but in the United States. We are fortunate to have them here."

Devjani Das is one of Carey's outstanding students. She is the valedictorian of the senior Class of 2000 and is prevailing in all of her activities. Her fellow classmate, Chris Lee, is ranked in the top 1 percent of his class and is equally well-known among the student body.
