As we head into the holiday season, another winter season will also be upon us. Winter is the time of year when most people traditionally spend more time indoors, and perhaps, do not get as much exercise as they should. The Department of Parks and Recreation wants to change all that, as it offers programs and activities in which you might be interested, all year 'round.
Very popular with our residents is the vast array of fitness classes, Slimnastics for women, and Shape-Up for men, which are held at many different park facilities throughout the township. These courses are offered in different fitness levels, and are available at many different convenient times throughout the day, either daytime or evening.
The indoor Echo Park Fitness Complex in West Hempstead provides an opportunity to join an aquatic class, held in a structured format within the park's half-Olympic size indoor pool. Or you can make time to swim on your own, make use of the park's Universal Gym equipment, or relax in the steam and sauna rooms. One low daily fee or affordable season membership allows you to enjoy all that Echo Park has to offer. A membership to Echo Park also makes a great holiday gift for a friend or family member. The Newbridge Ice Rink in Bellmore also provides a place for winter fun and exercise at a very reasonable price.
As always, the department provides all kinds of entertainment options including shows and tours, this winter featuring a Jazz Series honoring the legendary Louis Armstrong and women entertainers of the 20th century, art history classes, art lessons, dancing and playing bridge. There are walking classes available, as are outdoor physical fitness trails, swimming and diving lessons, and arts and crafts for the kids.
All in all, winter is a great time to be active and stay active. On behalf of all the members of the Hempstead Town Board, I urge you to find out what is available for you in a park near your home. Call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 292-9000 to find out more. Also, be sure to look for your Winter-Spring Events Guide in the mail in early January. That way you'll be ready and "in shape" for all the great events and activities that take place in the spring and summer.
