State Senator Michael Balboni was recently joined by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in presenting the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross to Santo Bivone of Elmont.

Established in 1925, the Conspicuous Service Cross recognizes exemplary military service and is awarded to New York State citizens who received specified high individual decorations while in active service with the United States Armed Forces.

Surrounded by family members at a dinner held in his honor at the Westbury Manor, Mr. Bivone received the Conspicuous Service Cross certificate and medal from Senator Balboni, and an American flag that once flew over the nation's Capitol from Congresswoman McCarthy.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Bivone served in the US Army during World War II and fought in the Ardennes, Normandy and the Rhineland. Mr. Bivone, who celebrates his 80th birthday in November, now resides in Elmont with his wife of nearly 50 years, Virginia.

In presenting the flag to Mr. Bivone, Congresswoman McCarthy said, "I present this flag to you as a reminder that we can never forget all you have done for us."

"As we approach the new millennium, we must never forget the many sacrifices that were made by veterans during this century, sacrifices that have ensured the freedom of all tomorrow's children," said Senator Balboni. "In this day and age of mythical action figures and fictional super heroes, Santo Bivone stands above as a true living hero of whom we can all be proud."
