Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta has announced that the Goodwill Games Swimming and Diving Center has received NACPRO's (National Association of County Parks and Recreation Officials) Parks and Recreation Facility¬Class III Award. The award was presented at the NACPRO 1999 Awards Banquet on July 17 in St. Louis.
"Nassau County is becoming a major sports mecca in the northeast. Sporting events and family recreational activities, like those held at the aquatic center, add to our quality of life," said Gulotta.
The Eisenhower Park Swimming and Diving Center, which is the largest indoor competition pool in the country and the second largest in the world, officially opened in April of 1998 and is available for the enjoyment of all Nassau County residents. It was built largely with state funding and has been recognized as the finest aquatic center in America. The aquatic center is an 80,000 square foot facility designed to accommodate a wide range of aquatic activities, including swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. In addition, the facility is equipped to provide therapeutic treatment to the physically challenged. It is available year-round to all Nassau County residents and has already been the host for numerous swimming and diving events, including the 1998 Goodwill Games.
