This year's sixth annual Carey Junior High Sports Awards Night, an evening designed to show tribute to the school's seventh and eighth grade athletes, was held recently in the auditorium. Its overwhelming success is due to the organization and involvement of Carey's fine Athletic Director, Ed Quinlan.

The awards ceremony opened with a speech from Carey's Principal, Thomas Dolan. Other teachers and staff who were present included Janine Masiello, volleyball and softball coach; Matt Hupe, track coach; Lisa Carey, cheerleading; and Mike Milio. Mrs. Joanne Bergbom, student activities director, also helped out. The night started off with awards for the fall sports such as cross country, soccer and football. Some of the participants were eighth graders Mary Ellen Van Wie, Dan Hosemann, Cristina Psaros and Joe Coro, and seventh graders Justin Wilson, Karin Thorsen, Jessica Sesack and Dan Spitaliere.

"Great credit should go to Mr. Quinlan for initiating this event and executing it so well for the last six years," commented Dolan in his speech.

The night ended on a good note with the winter sports being honored, which include boys basketball and girls volleyball. Some of the star players were eighth graders Matt Bellomo, Nicole Falcetta, Becky Stewart, Liz Bonnot and Caitlin Antoncich, and seventh graders Bryan Everson, kevin Ermann, T. J. Lopez, Ryan Gilroy and Travis Salkey.

"I enjoyed the Junior High Sports Awards Night because of the enthusiasm of the junior high athletes combined with the fact that it affords me an opportunity to meet many parents that I have not met before," said Quinlan.
