The Carey Clipper and the Carey Riptide won three prominent awards at the Newsday School Journalism Awards held recently at Newsday's headquarters in Melville. The reporters who went to receive the awards included Rishi Trivedi, Rob Skarda and Tatiana Porcelli, as well as Brian Merges, the advisor to the newspapers.
"These awards are very much appreciated," said Merges. "The staffs of the Clipper and Riptide have worked extremely hard and deserve every bit of recognition they received."
The most honorable award received was the first place award for Feature Writing, for an article about body piercing by Heather Simon and Lisa Mascia. Although the Clipper has won many other awards from Newsday, this was the first time the Clipper received a first place award. The second award won for Layout and Typography, a third place medal. In addition to the Clipper's two awards, the Riptide won its first ever award, second place in the category of Overall Excellence for junior high newspapers throughout Nassau County.
