The Carey Winter Track team participated in the Class B county championships. Nine of the athletes scored points for Carey with some outstanding performances. In the high jump, Phil Lamour placed fifth and Tim Dand tied for fourth. Melissa Yanek has a personal record in the 1500 walk and took fifth. In the shot put Alexis Whyte won a fourth place medal. The boys 4 x 800 relay team broke the school record with a time of 8:54. Members of the relay are Greg Puga, Kevin Mille and senior Ryan Ottavio and Frankie Savinon. Also, Frankie gained All-County honors with a third place finish in the 1600. Last, but not least was an amazing performance by senior Crystal Cammarano. In only her third race, Crystal became county champ in the 1500 walk, lowering her best time by 53 seconds. Her time of 7:36.2 was not only the best in the county this year, but also met the qualifying standard for the National championships. At the winter track seed meeting Carey placed six athletes in the state qualifiers meet. They are: Frankie Savinon in the 1600 meter run, Tim Dand - high jump, Alexis Whyte - shot put, Melissa Yanek and Crystal Cammarano - 1500 walk and Kathleen Moran - triple jump. At the Section VIII seed meeting, Kathleen Moran was honored by being declared All-County in the events. Kathleen was second in the long jump and county champ in the triple jump. A Carey cheer to the Junior Varsity boys basketball team who defeated the Hewlett Bulldogs by a score of 52 - 43. Carey's total of eight three point goals combined with a tenacious defense provided an impressive win for the hardworking, "never say die" Carey team.
