During five days in February, the 10th to the 14th, Elmont Memorial's Model United Nations team participated in the 36th annual North American Model United Nations Conference in Washington, DC (NAIMUN). Elmont was recognized with the First Place Outstanding Overall Achievement Award.
Elmont represented the United Kingdom in the General Assembly, the United States in the Asian Regional Forum, and Ghana both in the Organization of African Unity and in the National Security Council simulation. Eighteen Elmont students researched their individual committees and practiced in class each morning at 7 a.m.
The committee sessions run approximately four hours and occur three times per day. Except for a short lunch and dinner, students entered the meeting at 8:30 a.m. and left at 11 p.m. After a team meeting over pizza, students welcomed a few hours of sleep.
Elmont Memorial's success was a result of the delegate's long hours of preparation as they researched their topics and practiced speaking and caucusing following Robert's Rules of Order. Ultimately, success is measured in the overall commitment to excellence made by the students, Model UN Advisor, Mel Kohn, stated, "Elmont has often been recognized for excellence at Model UN conferences in America and Europe, but this performance was clearly one of the team's finest efforts."
The administration faculty, and staff at Elmont Memorial is extraordinarily proud of Chris Maitland, Sheldon Smith, Pavan Pulijaal, Tokumbo Otukoya, Luis Ninan, Jaison Varughese, Joe Varughese, Melissa DiPetro, Anil Kurian, Chris Hunt-Walker, Danielle Lewis, Chad Sedaphal, Adam Kwartowitz, Charles Alexander, Nisha-Aravindakshan, Anju Alexander, Elwin James, and Jon Werberg.
