The Sewanhaka District wrestling program was introduced three years ago to extend the opportunity to wrestle to all interested young men within the district. The program has had an overwhelming response averaging well over 60 students per year. The team is predominantly comprised of wrestlers from Elmont, Floral Park and Carey High Schools. In addition, the district team is being fed by five junior high teams, a program initiated two years ago. Combined, the junior high teams train over 100 wrestlers for junior varsity and varsity competition. The enormous interest in wrestling has led to a very competitive varsity team.
For the past two years the team has finished with a 4-2 league record and has improved its county ranking from 32 to 27. Not only has the team done extremely well, but individual members have been recognized on county, state and national levels. Presently, the team trains the 1998 cadet national champion and on January 23 three Sewanhaka District wrestlers became nationally ranked.
The junior high season starts in late February and plans to maintain its level of hard work and determination. Last year, Elmont Memorial's junior high squad defeated all other teams to become district champions in a brutal end of the year face-off. Any seventh or eighth grade student wishing to join the defending champion wrestling team should contact either Mr. Jackson or Mr. Conway in school.
