Nassau County coaches recently awarded Sewanhaka High School football player Jeremiah Pope and soccer player Tom Rice All-County honors.

Senior running back Jeremiah Pope completed an outstanding football season, rushing for over 1,000 yards with 19 receptions and 16 touchdowns. In addition, the outstanding defensive back and return specialist was selected to the Nassau County All Conference III Team and represented Sewanhaka in the Exceptional Senior All-Star game. A three-year starter on the varsity football team, Coach Lou Ponterotto characterized Jeremiah as a fine student, unquestioned leader of the team and an outstanding member of the Sewanhaka community. Jeremiah hopes to continue his football career in college while majoring in communications.

Soccer coach Lenny Schmalz expressed similar sentiments about senior co-captain Tom Rice, describing him as the epitome of the term student-athlete. While maintaining an outstanding academic average, Tom has found time for extracurricular activities including Model UN, baseball and basketball. In particular, his contributions to the Sewanhaka soccer team have been quite memorable. A four year member of the varsity soccer team, he has scored a total of 51 goals in his career. This year, Tom scored 17 goals and was awarded All-County honors for the second year in a row. He recently participated in the Exceptional Seniors Game and hopes to continue playing in college.
