The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education met for its annual reorganization meeting and re-elected Martin Cernese of New Hyde Park - Garden City Park as its president. Cernese has been a trustee of the New Hyde Park/Garden City Park Board of Education in 1992 and appointed to the Sewanhaka Central High School District board in 1994. He has a bachelor's degree in Operations and Management, a master's degree in business from the New York Institute of Technology, and is currently director of the Eastern Region of Aeronautical Radio, Inc. Cernese has been a resident of New Hyde Park for the past 25 years. He and his wife Noreen have three children: Nicholas, a senior at Boston University, Richard a junior at NYU and Danielle a student at New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
Archie T. Cheng was re-elected as the board's vice-president. Cheng has served on the Floral Park - Bellerose Board of Education since 1989 and has represented Floral Park/Bellerose on the Sewanhaka Board of Education since 1991. He is an attorney practicing in Floral Park. He is a graduate of Queens College and holds a doctoral degree from Brooklyn Law School. Cheng has been an attorney for the Floral Park Indians, a member of the Floral Park Rescue Company, coach of the Indians soccer and basketball programs, co-coach for the Floral Park Little League and coach for OLV CYO lacrosse. Cheng has lived in Floral Park Village since 1978 with his wife, Denise, a registered nurse. They have three children; Michael, 19, a 1997 graduate of Floral Park Memorial High School; Timothy, 16, attending Floral Park Memorial; and Steven, 12, a student at the Floral Park Memorial High School.
Sewanhaka also welcomed four new members to its Board of Education: Robert Burke from Floral Park - Bellerose, Lillian Carillo and Deanna Doreson from Elmont, and Gail Keyes from New Hyde Park - Garden City Park. Trustees Jean Fichtl and Dr. Roger Roess returned to the board representing Franklin Square.
Robert Burke has been on the Floral Park Board of Education since 1995 and is now its vice president. He is founder and president of Safety Anesthesia Equipment Services, Inc., a bio-medical service company located in Floral Park. He lives with his wife, Marie, and their sons Robert, 15, a 10th grader at Floral Park Memorial High School, and Jonathan, 13, an 8th grader at Floral Park Memorial.
Lillian Carillo has lived in Elmont all her life. Carillo was elected to the Elmont Board of Education in June, 1998 and appointed as an Elmont representative to the Sewanhaka Board in July. She is a past president of PTA organizations in both the Dutch Broadway School and Elmont Memorial High School and a lifetime member of the New York State PTA. Recently, she served on Elmont's Shared Decision Making Committee. Her husband, Louis, is president of the Elmont Memorial Spartans Club. Their son, Nicholas, graduated Elmont Memorial High School in June 1998 and now attends the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Deanna Doreson is a graduate of the Elmont school system and has served on the Elmont Board of Education since 1987. She is twice past president of the Dutch Broadway PTA, a lifetime member of the New York State PTA, a member of the Interschool PTA and the Parkhurst Civic Association. Her husband, Steven, works in advertising and sales. They have three sons: Scott, 26, is a graduate of Adelphi University and Hofstra Law School; Lawrence attends Hofstra University, and Matthew is a student at Nassau Community College.
Gail Keyes is a lifelong resident of the Sewanhaka Central High School District and has been a trustee on the New Hyde Park - Garden City Park Board of Education for the past eight years. Keyes holds a bachelor's degree from Hofstra University and a master of arts from Adelphi University, where she is now a dean's list student taking advanced courses in science. She is a science teacher in the Great Neck South Middle School. She has been an officer in the local, Interschool, Sewanhaka Central Council and Nassau District PTAs and has been a tutor for disadvantaged students in the Upward Bound organization. She and her husband, William, have four sons all of whom attend or have graduated from the New Hyde Park - Garden City Park and Sewanhaka school districts.

The Sewanhaka Board of Education's next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. in the third floor board room of Sewanhaka High School, located at Tulip and Covert Avenues in Floral Park. During the 1998-99 school year, board meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of every month, with the exception of December. The official schedule is as follows:
